OTP for banks: SMS and WhatsApp

A login code has to arrive in seconds, on a channel the customer can open, without a marketing line attached. Banks use SMS for every handset and WhatsApp authentication when the customer is on WhatsApp.

Which channel carries the code

SMS OTPWhatsApp authentication
ReachAny mobile numberWhatsApp users only
FormatShort text from a registered sender IDAn approved authentication template, usually with a copy-code button
When it failsOperator delay or a blocked senderThe number is not on WhatsApp, or the template is not approved yet

A practical pattern is WhatsApp first when you know the customer uses it, and SMS if that send is not delivered. The comparison is in OTP on WhatsApp vs SMS.

What a bank should not put in the message

Local setup

SMS sender names in Lebanon, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Egypt are registered with the operators. Start from SMS sender ID. WhatsApp authentication templates are often blocked on a new number until Meta raises the messaging limit; the path is in the Help Center. Until that template is live, send the code by SMS.

Country routes: SMS Lebanon, SMS UAE, SMS Saudi Arabia, SMS Egypt.

FAQ

Can a bank send OTP on WhatsApp?

Yes, as an approved authentication template on the WhatsApp Business API. It is a one-time code, not a promotion. SMS remains the fallback for numbers that are not on WhatsApp.

Why is the WhatsApp OTP template unavailable?

Meta often withholds authentication templates until the number has a high enough messaging limit. Send approved utility or marketing traffic to opted-in customers, or use SMS OTP, until that limit is raised.

Should the OTP include a marketing offer?

No. An offer turns the message into marketing, which is a different template, a different Meta rate, and a reason for rejection.
